VISIT FLORIDA Sustainability Efforts

Protecting the Manatees

Sea cows, otherwise known as manatees, are a staple of Florida’s waters. Throughout the state, visitors can get a chance to see these beautiful aquatic mammals in their natural habitats and can get up close and personal with them. It is important for Visit Florida to convey to travellers why the state is working hard to preserve this threatened species and restore their habitats. The tourism board is a big supporter of conservation initiatives such as the Kings Bay Restoration project, which is dedicated to replanting native eel grass, and removing toxic algae that reduces oxygen levels and kills off food sources for numerous creatures, the manatee among them. Recently, the Florida House of Representatives proposed doubling the usual manatee recovery subsidy to $8 million, through its supplemental funding list, to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to help the state’s beloved threatened manatee population.
