Hawaii Tourism Authority Sustainability Efforts

Malama Hawaii

With a hope of inspiring visitors to travel mindfully while in Hawaii, the Hawaiian Tourism Authority called upon almost 100 businesses and volunteer organizations across the Hawaiian Islands to create the Malama Hawaii programme, which offers unique and uplifting experiences that allow travellers to give something back to the land. Malama Hawaii volunteer projects range from reforestation and tree planting to self-directed beach cleanups, ocean-reef preservation and planting the Hawaiian staple crop kalo (taro Malama Hawaii opportunities are many and the list of projects and acts travellers can participate in while in Hawaii is always growing.

Destination Management Action Plans

Hawaii Tourism Authority, in partnership with the counties and the respective island visitors bureau, developed Destination Management Action Plans (DMAPs) for Kauai, Maui Nui (Maui, Molokai and Lanai), Oahu and Hawaii Island.

As defined in HTA’s Strategic Plan 2020-2025, destination management includes attracting and educating responsible visitors; advocating for solutions to overcrowded attractions, overtaxed infrastructure, and other tourism-related problems; and working with other responsible agencies to improve natural and cultural assets valued by both Hawai‘i residents and visitors.
